"Safari"

The Swahili word safari means "journey", originally from the Arabic nounسفر (safar) meaning "journey", travel", "trip" or "tour"; the verb for "to travel" in Swahili is kusafiri. These words are used for any type of journey, e.g. by bus from Nairobi to Mombasa or by ferry from Dar es Salaam to Unguja. 'Safari' entered the English language at the end of the 1850s thanks to explorer Richard Francis Burton.

The Regimental March of the King's African Rifles was "Funga Safari", literally 'set out on a journey', or, in other words, pack up equipment ready for travel.

Funga safari, funga safari. Funga safari, funga safari. Amri ya nani? Amri ya nani? Amri ya Bwana Kapteni, Amri ya KAR.

Which is, in English:

Set out on a journey, Set out on a journey. On whose orders? On whose orders? On the order of the boss captain, On the order of the KAR.

On Kenya's independence from the United Kingdom, "Funga Safari" was retained as the Regimental March of the Kenya Rifles, the successor to the KAR. Source

African Lion Safari



African Lion Safari is a wildlife park with a drive through dedicated to the conservation of endangered species. Over 1,000 unique birds and animals wander free in seven different drive-through Game Reserves.

The park spans over 750 acres, 250 of which are dedicated to providing extensive expanses of shrubbery, meadows, or woodland for animals to interact with one another in a natural setting. Mixed species roam and interact as they would in the wild in numerous Game Reserves. The majority of the property is made up of farmland, bushland, and other ecosystems, including 40 sections of provincially significant wetland that we maintain and monitor.

African Lion Safari is highly proud of its international reputation for competence in the care, management, and breeding of a variety of endangered bird and animal species. The success of African Lion Safari's conservation and breeding activities is due in large part to our committed employees. They offer their special abilities, years of experience, and dedication to ensuring that our animals receive the best possible care.



African Lion Safari consults and supports in-situ projects such as the reintroduction of species such as the Eastern Loggerhead shrike, Burrowing owl, Ferruginous hawk, and Barn owl all over the world. Our animal management staff travels the world to give training and support in order to improve the conservation, management, and wellbeing of a variety of animals, including elephants.


The park has been a popular tourist destination in Ontario for almost 50 years. African Lion Safari seeks to provide an entertaining and educational day "On Safari!" for all guests, as well as an opportunity to learn more about the animals in our care.
